Where did this insertion method actually come from?

For many manufacturers of distilled spirits, bottles with a pear inside are their special trademark. To get the pear into the bottle, they inserted the young fruit into the bottles while still on the branch. The pears matured and grew to their full size. But only a certain percentage of these pears developed properly. That’s why we use an alternative method in which the bottom of the bottle is cut open, the pear is inserted, and the bottom is again sealed.
